Biological timeline of embryo implantation
Following fertilization in the fallopian tube, the dividing zygote travels into the uterine cavity over 5 to 6 days to form a blastocyst.
Groundbreaking prospective research (Wilcox et al., NEJM) established that implantation occurs between 6 and 12 days past ovulation (DPO). Fully 84% of successful implantations occur on days 8, 9, or 10 post-ovulation, with 9 DPO being the statistical peak.
Upon implantation into the vascular endometrium, the developing trophoblast begins secreting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which enters the maternal bloodstream and doubles every 48 hours.
Worked example: 28-day cycle implantation
A woman ovulates on October 14th.
The 6 to 12 DPO implantation window spans October 20th through October 26th, with peak likelihood on October 23rd (9 DPO).
Urine pregnancy tests can detect early hCG approximately 3 to 4 days after peak implantation (around October 26th to 27th).

CALCULATOR QUESTIONS
Embryo implantation date & window calculator questions
What does implantation bleeding look like?
Implantation bleeding is typically very light pinkish or brownish spotting that lasts from a few hours to two days. Unlike menstrual bleeding, it does not contain clots and does not fill a pad or tampon.
Does every pregnant woman experience implantation cramping?
No. Only about 25% to 30% of women report mild twinges or light spotting during implantation. The absence of symptoms is completely normal in healthy pregnancies.
