Ovulation timing and the fertile window
In human biology, ovulation takes place approximately 14 days before the onset of the next menstrual period. In an average 28-day cycle, this corresponds to day 14, but in a 32-day cycle, ovulation occurs around day 18.
The clinical fertile window spans 6 days: the 5 days leading up to ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself. Sperm can survive in nutrient-rich cervical mucus for up to 5 days, whereas an unfertilized ovum remains viable for only 12 to 24 hours.
Clinical studies demonstrate that the highest probability of conception occurs from sexual intercourse taking place 1 to 2 days prior to ovulation and on ovulation day.
Worked example: 30-day cycle calculation
A woman with an LMP of October 1st and an average 30-day cycle has an estimated 14-day luteal phase.
Ovulation occurs on cycle day 16 (October 17th). The 6-day fertile window spans October 12th through October 17th, with peak fertility on October 15th, 16th, and 17th.
