Civil Service Alpha CARE scheme mechanics

Alpha is a career average pension scheme introduced on 1 April 2015. Members accrue 2.32% (~1/43.1th) of their actual pensionable earnings each year, revalued annually by CPI.

Normal Pension Age is linked to your State Pension age. You can commute £1 of annual pension for £12 of tax-free cash up to HMRC limits.

Worked example: Civil Service Alpha pension

A civil servant earning £40,000 with 20 years of service accrues an unreduced Alpha pension of £18,560 per year (£1,547 per month).
