US Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) formula
The FERS Basic Annuity formula is: 1.0% × High-3 Average Salary × Years of Service (or 1.1% if retiring at age 62 or older with 20 or more years of service).
Federal retirement also includes the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) with 5% government matching and Social Security benefits.
Worked example: FERS basic annuity
A federal employee retiring at age 62 with 25 years of service and a High-3 average salary of $90,000 qualifies for the 1.1% multiplier: 1.1% × 25 × $90,000 = $24,750 per year ($2,063 per month) in guaranteed FERS annuity.
