Speed, distance, and time relationships
The relationship between speed, distance, and time is expressed by the kinematic formula: Speed (v) = Distance (d) / Time (t).
Rearranging the formula allows solving for any variable: Distance d = v × t, and Time t = d / v. For accurate calculations, ensure units are consistent before calculating (such as converting kilometres and hours to km/h, or miles and hours to mph).
Running and athletic pacing is the reciprocal of speed, representing the time required to cover a standard unit of distance (minutes per kilometre or minutes per mile).
Worked example: Average driving speed
If a vehicle travels 180 kilometres in 2 hours and 15 minutes (2.25 hours), its average speed is:
Speed = 180 km ÷ 2.25 h = 80.0 km/h (equivalent to 49.71 mph or 22.22 m/s).
The average pace is 60 ÷ 80 = 0.75 minutes per kilometre (45 seconds per km).

CALCULATOR QUESTIONS
Speed distance time calculator questions
What is the formula for speed?
Speed equals distance divided by time: v = d / t.
How do you convert km/h to mph?
Multiply by 0.621371, or divide by 1.609344. For example, 100 km/h is approximately 62.14 mph.
What is pace in running?
Pace is the time taken to travel one kilometre or one mile, usually expressed in minutes and seconds (e.g. 5:00 min/km or 8:03 min/mile).
