US HDPE pipe engineering standards
In the United States, municipal and industrial polyethylene pipe is sized according to the Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI) and American Water Works Association (AWWA C901 / C906). Standard Iron Pipe Size (IPS) and Ductile Iron Pipe Size (DIPS) outside diameters are matched with standardized Dimension Ratios (DR = OD / t_min).
The nominal working pressure rating is computed from the Hydrostatic Design Basis (HDB) at 73.4°F: P = (2 × HDB × DF × FT) / (DR - 1). Standard bimodal PE4710 resins have an HDB of 1,600 psi with a water design factor (DF) of 0.63, yielding 200 psi ratings for DR 11 pipe.
For gas distribution pipelines governed by DOT CFR 49 Part 192, a design factor of 0.32 or 0.40 applies depending on jurisdictional class location and pipe diameter.
Worked example: 6" DIPS municipal water main
A 6" DIPS water main has an outside diameter of 6.900 inches. Sized at DR 11 for municipal potable water service (PE4710 resin):
The minimum wall thickness is 6.900 / 11 = 0.627 inches, giving an inside diameter of 5.570 inches and a continuous working pressure rating of 200 psig at 73.4°F.
For an above-ground or trenched run of 500 feet experiencing a 40°F temperature swing, thermal contraction is ΔL = 12 × α × L × ΔT = 12 × (1.2 × 10^-4) × 500 × 40 = 28.8 inches, requiring unrestrained expansion loops or restrained butt-fusion anchorage.

CALCULATOR QUESTIONS
US PPI TR-33 HDPE pipe calculator questions
What is the difference between IPS and DIPS in HDPE pipe?
IPS (Iron Pipe Size) matches steel pipe outside diameters, while DIPS (Ductile Iron Pipe Size) matches cast/ductile iron pipe diameters. DIPS pipe is slightly larger in diameter for the same nominal size (e.g. 6" IPS is 6.625" OD whereas 6" DIPS is 6.900" OD).
Why is PE4710 preferred over PE3608 in US projects?
PE4710 resins have higher resistance to slow crack growth (SCG) and allow a higher design factor (0.63 vs 0.50), providing a 25% higher pressure rating or thinner wall for the same design pressure.
