The Menopause Society (NAMS) clinical protocols
The Menopause Society (formerly NAMS) defines the Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop (STRAW + 10) criteria as the international gold standard for categorizing the menopause transition.
Early perimenopause is marked by a persistent difference of 7 or more days in the length of consecutive cycles. Late perimenopause is characterized by 60 or more days of amenorrhea.
ACOG and NAMS emphasize that hormone therapy remains the most effective treatment for vasomotor symptoms and the genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM).
Worked example: US menopause projection
A 44-year-old woman whose mother experienced menopause at age 49 is projected to reach natural menopause around age 50.3.
Perimenopause onset is estimated between ages 46 and 50.

CALCULATOR QUESTIONS
The Menopause Society (NAMS) age predictor questions
What is the STRAW + 10 staging system?
STRAW + 10 is the clinical staging system developed by international endocrine societies that divides adult female life into reproductive stages (-5 to -3), menopausal transition (-2 to -1), and postmenopause (+1 to +2).
Is Hormone Therapy (HT) safe?
The Menopause Society’s Position Statement affirms that for healthy women younger than 60 or within 10 years of menopause onset, HT has an overwhelmingly favorable benefit-risk ratio for treating hot flashes and preventing bone loss.
