UK IVF protocols and NHS maternity handover
Under HFEA regulations, single embryo transfer (eSET) is standard practice in UK fertility clinics to reduce multiple birth risks. Following a positive pregnancy blood test (serum beta hCG) around 10 to 14 days post-transfer, clinics perform a reassurance scan at 7 weeks.
Once a fetal heartbeat is confirmed, patient care transitions from the IVF clinic to the local NHS maternity trust. The formal NHS booking appointment occurs between 8 and 10 weeks.
The NHS midwife uses your exact transfer date and embryo age to register your EDD on the NHS maternity electronic patient record.
Worked example: NHS frozen embryo transfer (FET)
A patient undergoes a Day 5 blastocyst transfer at an NHS clinic on 1 November.
The due date is 1 November + 261 days = 20 July. NHS maternity handover occurs at 8 weeks (around 8 December).

CALCULATOR QUESTIONS
UK HFEA IVF transfer due date calculator questions
Will the NHS 12-week dating scan change my IVF due date?
No. RCOG and NICE guidelines specify that ultrasound dating should not supersede an IVF transfer date, because the embryonic age is known with complete biological precision.
Do I qualify for NHS maternity exemption during IVF pregnancy?
Yes. Once confirmed pregnant by your clinic or GP, you can apply for a Maternity Exemption Certificate (MatEx) providing free NHS dental care and free prescriptions throughout pregnancy and for 12 months post-birth.
