Understanding concentration units and formulas
Concentration expresses the amount of solute present in a given quantity of solution or solvent. In chemical science and laboratory practice, concentration can be stated in several ways depending on the application.
Mass concentration (ρ or C) measures the mass of solute per unit volume of solution: C = m_solute / V_solution. Standard metric units include grams per litre (g/L) and milligrams per millilitre (mg/mL), where 1 g/L equals 1 mg/mL.
Percentage concentration is commonly expressed as weight-by-volume (% w/v = grams of solute per 100 mL of solution) or weight-by-weight (% w/w = mass of solute / total mass of solution × 100%). For example, normal saline (0.9% NaCl w/v) contains 0.9 g of sodium chloride per 100 mL of water.
For dilute solutions and environmental monitoring, parts per million (PPM) represents 1 milligram of solute per kilogram of solution (or approximately 1 mg/L in water), while parts per billion (PPB) represents 1 microgram per kilogram.
Worked example: Mass and percentage calculation
Suppose you dissolve 15 g of potassium chloride in water to make a total solution volume of 500 mL.
The mass concentration is C = 15 g / 0.5 L = 30 g/L (or 30 mg/mL).
The percentage strength (% w/v) is 30 g/L ÷ 10 = 3.0% w/v. Expressed in parts per million, 30 g/L equals 30,000 PPM.
When to use PPM versus percentage
Percentage (% w/w or % w/v) is best suited for bulk chemistry, pharmaceuticals, household products, and reagent preparation where solute concentrations exceed 0.1% (1,000 PPM).
PPM and PPB are used in water quality analysis, environmental toxicology, soil contamination reports, and trace element chemistry where concentrations are very small fractions of the total mass.
Inputs for the concentration calculator
Calculation mode
Select whether you are calculating concentration from mass and volume, determining mass percentage or PPM from total sample mass, or solving for the mass of solute needed to reach a target strength.
Solute mass
The weight of the dissolved compound or solid substance (e.g. grams, milligrams, or kilograms).
Solution volume or total mass
The final volume of the liquid solution, or the total combined mass of the solution including solute and solvent.
CALCULATOR QUESTIONS
Solution concentration calculator questions
What is the difference between % w/v and % w/w?
Weight-by-volume (% w/v) is the mass in grams per 100 mL of liquid solution. Weight-by-weight (% w/w) is the mass of solute divided by the total mass of the mixture multiplied by 100%.
How do you convert g/L to PPM in water?
Because 1 litre of water weighs approximately 1,000 grams (1,000,000 mg), 1 g/L equals 1,000 mg/L, which corresponds to 1,000 PPM in aqueous solutions.
How do I calculate the mass of solute needed?
Multiply the desired concentration (in g/L) by the final volume (in litres). For instance, to prepare 2 L of a 5 g/L solution, you need 5 g/L × 2 L = 10 grams of solute.
What is normal saline concentration?
Normal saline is a 0.9% w/v sodium chloride solution, which means 9 grams of NaCl dissolved in purified water to make a total volume of 1,000 mL (1 litre).
