The PHSO State Pension age investigation
In March 2024, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) published its final report concluding the DWP was guilty of maladministration by failing to give adequate notice of State Pension age increases to 1950s women.
The Ombudsman recommended Parliament intervene to award compensation on Level 4 of its remedy scale, corresponding to payments between £1,000 and £2,950 per affected woman.
Worked example: 1954 born woman
A woman born in June 1954 saw her State Pension age rise from 60 to approximately 64.5 years, a delay of 55 months. Based on the 2024/25 new State Pension rate of £221.20 per week, this represents £52,709 in delayed pension income, with an Ombudsman Level 4 recommended compensation midpoint of £1,975.
