How your pay is worked out

Weekly pay is your hourly rate multiplied by your hours per week. Yearly pay is weekly pay × 52 weeks, and monthly pay is the yearly figure divided by 12.

Daily pay is weekly pay divided by the number of days you work each week, so it reflects your actual working days rather than a fixed number of hours.

Worked examples

At £15 an hour for 37.5 hours a week, weekly pay is £15 × 37.5 = £562.50. Over 52 weeks that's £29,250.00 a year, or £2,437.50 a month. Spread over 5 days, it's £112.50 a day.

At £12 an hour for 20 hours over 4 days, weekly pay is £240.00, yearly pay is £12,480.00, monthly pay is £1,040.00 and daily pay is £60.00.

What the figures don't include

The results are gross pay before income tax, social security contributions, pension contributions and any other deductions, so your take-home pay will be lower.

The yearly figure assumes you're paid for all 52 weeks, as salaried employees usually are, including paid holiday. If you're not paid for holidays or don't work every week, your yearly pay will be lower. Overtime, bonuses and shift premiums aren't included.

CALCULATOR QUESTIONS

Hourly wage calculator questions

How much is £15 an hour a year?

For a 37.5-hour week, £15 an hour is £29,250.00 a year before tax, assuming you're paid for 52 weeks.

How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the salary by 52 to get weekly pay, then by your weekly hours. For example, £29,250 ÷ 52 ÷ 37.5 = £15 an hour.

Why is monthly pay not four times weekly pay?

A month is slightly more than four weeks. There are 52 weeks in a year but 12 months, so monthly pay is weekly pay × 52 ÷ 12.

Is this my take-home pay?

No. These are gross figures before tax and deductions. Use a take-home pay calculator to see what you'd receive after tax.
